Disc Problems

Conditions > Disc Problems

Discs are gel like pads that reside between your vertebra or spinal bones that allow you to flex and bend. The discs are the weak points in your spine. They are made up of collagen fibers called sharpe fibers that attach into the vertebra above to the vertebra below. In the center of the disc is a sponge like substance that is made up of about 85% water. Since water is non-compressible, it acts like a marble in between two hard flat surfaces that allows for movement of bending.

As you sleep at night you’re disc fill with fluid making you taller in the morning. As the day goes on, the fluid in your disc seeps out due to the compressive forces of gravity. As you age you begin to lose fluid in your disc from damage to the sharpe fibers. Injuries such as, falls, constant bending, lifting, pro-long sitting can weaken and damage the fibers of the disc causing them to bulge and protrude. The bulging disc now invades the space where the nerve exits the spine causing nerve irritation.

Nerve irritation in the low back can result in organic diseases such as endometriosis, infections, bladder problems, prostate problems, miscarriages, sterility, impotence, cystitis, menstrual cramps and constipation. It is not uncommon for an individual suffering low back pain to have anyone of these conditions and get relief after being under regular chiropractic care.

Medication, physical therapy and surgery are the common options allopathic doctors offer their patients with disc conditions. Studies have shown chiropractic care to more successful and cost effective than medication. Back surgery has a high failure rate and should be the last resort. Chiropractic has saved many individuals from surgery and is safe and proven effective. Studies have shown reduction of disc herniation after chiropractic care eliminating the need for surgery.

Chiropractic is also very effective in preventing disc problems from occurring and has been helpful for patients who had fail spinal surgeries.
